In 1995 I defended my doctoral thesis, working in the group of Professor José Mataix Verdú. The thesis was rated with the highest grade and with the extraordinary doctorate prize. In 1996 I joined the military service. In 1997 I was awarded a postdoctoral fellowship that I enjoyed for 24 months at the Rowett Research Institute in Aberdeen, Scotland, in the group of Prof. Klaus Wahle, working on oxidative stress and gene expression of cancer. In 1999 I was contracted as visiting teacher at the Università Politecnica delle Marche, Ancona, Italy, where I was working with Prof. Maurizio Battino. In 1999, I obtained contracts for the reincorporation of doctors and technologists to research groups in Spain. In 2003 I got a contract from the Ramón y Cajal program, a moment in which I started to direct the line of aging and redox biology of which I am currently leading. In 2006 I was contracted as assistant professor. From 2012, I am full professor of physiology at the University of Granada.

My research lines are focused on the study of aging and its associated diseases (cancer, neurodegenerative, cardiovascular) in relation to the role of diet (olive oil, strawberries, honey), redox biology and mitochondria.

I have been the principal investigator of a number of research projects, including some funded by Spanish government (AGL2008-01057) and other by the regional government of Andalucía, Spain (AGR832). In addition, I have directed and collaborated in more than 40 projects and research contracts funded by private companies.

I have been the director of 14 doctoral theses, those of the last years with international mention. I has been an invited speaker at national and international conferences: Thailand, USA, UK, Austria, Italy, China.

I am the editor of a book for CABI publishing group "Olive Oil and Health. 2006) and I was the president of the scientific committee of a national congress and member of the scientific committee of 4 international congresses.

I am part of the Editorial Board of the following journals:

-Oxidative Medicine and Cellular Longevity (Academic Editor)

-Ars Pharmaceutica (Editorial Board Member)

-Diseases (Editorial Board Member)

-Journal of Berry Research (Editorial Board Member)

-eFood (Chief Editor)

-Food Frontiers (Chief Editor)

-International Journal of Molecular Sciences (Editor in Chief, section “Molecular Role of Xenobiotics”)

I have also been Guest Editor for a number of International Journal of Molecular Sciences, another for Molecules and another one for Nutrients.

Throughout my career I have been awarded 10 research awards, including the Extraordinary Doctoral Thesis Prize and in the last two courses "Excellent in Knowledge" awards from Caja Rural de Granada - University of Granada to the most cited paper and to the most cited researcher, respectively, in the field of health sciences at the University of Granada.
